Starting a Devotional Practice
Do you want to start a daily or weekly devotional practice but are not sure where to begin? Seven years ago I embarked on trying to start my own practice. Here is what I found.
A Short Backstory
One of the first books I read in 2011 was ‘Power of a Praying Wife’. And I give it full credit for saving my almost broken relationship. I read it secretly on my iPod on the subway to and from work. I didn’t want anyone to see what I was reading, I didn’t want anyone to know that I needed some invisible thing called ‘prayer’ to save my relationship.
The 15 years prior I had been in and out of two very dark relationships. I had developed patterns of thought and behaviour that I was continuing to replicate in my new relationship. Somehow this book spoke to me with such purpose and grace I was able to not only mend pain I had caused my spouse, but I created a stronger bond with him. And all without him knowing how this shift was happening.
If reading this one book could mend what I thought was permanently broken (both with myself and my spouse), what could digging deeper into the Word accomplish?
I had one thing holding me back, I didn’t know where to begin.
So I embarked on a journey. I found new books to read and Apps that would send me daily notifications with scripture quotes. Then I stumbled upon She Reads Truth. They had a website and you could sign up for a daily email that would lead you through a Devotional study. Soon they had an App and I would start my day by reading their email and ending it reading all the same content again on the App. Over the years I have gathered a collection of 27 of their Devotionals.
As social media expanded and She Reads Truth started to gain traction globally, other communities of Women in the Word developed. Over the past few years I have dipped myself into many of these communities.
Below I will go through some of my favorite communities to help guide you on your way.
